Where in the World is Tara Smith?
Where do I even begin?
I’ve been on the move since before the summer, first on a retreat in Thailand then straight to Cannes to work the film festival. I was there to do Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens’ hair for the opening night Calvin Klein party. I gave them sexy, tousled waves to complement their stunning Calvin Klein gowns.
I thought I’d only stay in the south of France for a couple of days, but nothing in Cannes is predictable! I met up with some old friends and made new friends along the way. The next thing I knew, I was there for two incredible weeks.
Between styling Rosario’s hair again for photo shoots with Ellen Von Unwerth, Jalouse magazine and Fendi, I created Eve Hewson’s look for the Palais for the premiere of her movie This Must Be the Place, starring Sean Penn and Frances McDormand. I loved the ponytail with sexy side swept bangs that I did on Eve. She looked so fresh and cool and rocked the red carpet. Then it was on to the Cinema for Peace’s star-studded inaugural dinner with one of my best friends, Jeanette Calliva in honor of Sean Penn and the incredible work he has done - and continues to do - for Haiti. Leonardo DiCaprio, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, Ryan Gosling and Naomi Campbell were all in attendance and it was an incredible evening. I also attended the annual amfAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research) gala at the luxe Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc in Antibes as a guest of the actress Daniela Lavender. The evening was in part a tribute to the late, great Elizabeth Taylor and the important work she did over so many years to benefit AIDS and HIV research. In addition to being very glamorous and very fun, the event raised a record amount of money for the foundation, which made the night even more memorable.
Then it was time to play!
I partied on Jamie Foxx’s yacht until the wee hours of the morning (and I actually woke up and ran the next day!), I ate a delicious seafood lunch on my friend Sir Philip Green’s yacht (complete with plush screening room), water-skied around my dear friend Vikram Chatwal’s yacht in Saint Tropez and jumped off the top deck of Renzo Rossi’s yacht into the crisp Mediterranean Sea. Do you know that if you focus on what you want and dunk underwater 10 times in a row, you cleanse yourself and tell the universe you are ready for all of your wildest dreams to come true? It’s true!
I attended Fashion for Relief’s charity fashion show put on by Vogue Italia and saw my girls Rosario and Yasmin Le Bon kill it on the runway. Then we went for a girls’ night out at Baoli where we danced the night away.
After the festival ended and Cannes cleared out, I got to experience one of the most special perks of all: spending a few days on Roberto Cavalli’s iridescent purple/blue yacht. Roberto had already left after the highly anticipated opening of his new store and an intimate party aboard the boat, but his wife Eva Cavalli was the ultimate hostess and, as someone aptly put it, “purveyor of magical experiences.” Karolina Kurkova, her husband Archie Drury and their adorable baby were also staying as a guest of the Cavallis and I actually ran into them just a couple of weeks after Cannes at the Sentebale Polo Cup, held to raise funds for Prince Harry’s charity in aid of disadvantaged African children. I styled Karolina’s hair for the event, she has such beautiful golden locks so I kept it simple, just adding some soft waves to fall around her shoulders and finishing with a spritz of my Top Coat Glosser which gives incredible shine and a fresh citrus scent with organic orange fragrances.
As for my own hair, I mostly stuck to a wash and go routine thanks to my arsenal of C Curls Shampoo and C Curls Conditioner, which adds fantastic definition and manageability to those with a mane of curly or wavy hair like mine! When my hair became a bit stressed and dry from all of the sun and swimming, I used my Feed the Root Shampoo and Feed the Root Conditioner, which nourishes and restores moisture to even the driest hair. And I never travel without my Basecoat Serum and Topcoat Glosser, all from my own line, naturally. But every once in a while, when the mood struck me, I would gather my hair in a ponytail at the crown of my head just behind hairline and secure with a rubberband for the fiercest lioness look you ever did see!
Next stop, the Venice Film Festival with Marisa Tomei. Stay tuned!
